Monte Carlo and Bust - Ronnie & Ricky's Bogus Journey

St.Johnstone Football Club celebrated the end of the century with a trip to Monte Carlo in the EUFA Cup during September 1999. Their opponents Monaco went on to win the French League (1999/2000). Within Europe, it is well known that Scottish club football is dominated by the Old Firm (a duopoly), a situation which restricts the overall wealth and well being of community based football by simple lack of competition. These home made video extracts highlight the kind of support that exists for community based teams, in this case the Perth Saints.

These home-movie/fly on the wall type video extracts were originally recorded on analogue and later converted to digital video. The conversion caused a few blimps particularly in the sound department. There was also the problem of erratic and jerky camera movement. You can regard this as a nouveux approach to avante garde film making or that the film crew (Ronnie) was inebriated (pissed). These scenes may not be suitable for those people of a nervous disposition.

You can view these downloads with Windows Media Player. Merely click on the title of each video extract below. View via broadband with Full Screen and Sound.

Hope you enjoy them.

1. Monaco Walkabout: This video extract follows the first days walk around Monte Carlo.

2. First Night: This video extract highlights a particular bar on the first night. Thankfully we have evidence that this evening ever existed.

3. Build Up Part 1 (the Harbour): At this location we met other groups of Saint's supporters enjoying themselves across from the harbour.

4. Build Up Part 2 (the Square): The final meeting place before the game for many, referred to as the 'Square'. In fact this wasn't a square but an excellent  area for revelling and partying with plenty space. Very enjoyable banter and laughs.

 5. The Game (1st Half): A record of portions of this match for all time. It gives a decent impression of the experience but not the match.  There was an obstructive fence to the right of us which separated the two sets of fans.

6. The Game (2nd Half): The filming of the second half terminated at Simone's and Monaco's first goal.

7. Goodbye Monte Carlo: A final goodbye and memory of some images which stayed with us as we returned to Nice Airport.
